In his fulsome introduction in Maclean's (September 2003) to an excerpt from Kay Armatage's revisionist biography of the Victoria-born Nell Shipman, The Girl from God's Country: Nell Shipman and the Silent Cinema, critic Brian D. Johnson claimed Shipman to be "Canada's first movie star." Johnson was not entirely accurate, however. Shipman was only a bit player in the history of Hollywood, never more than a starlet.
