Oct. 6--FORT WAYNE, Ind.--About 20 percent of the way through his 2003 soybean harvest, Steve Schlatter estimated Friday his bushel-per-acre yield was averaging in the low 40s.
That's about 15 percent below what he saw last year, but he's not complaining. Farmers were getting about $6.50 per bushel for beans straight off the combine -- the highest cash price they've seen since 1997. And the higher price "offsets it some," he said.
Unfortunately, Schlatter has heard of some farmers reporting soybean yields in the 20s "south of here and in Ohio," he said. "You take those guys that are getting 25 or 30 beans, and (the higher ...
