Analyst says grocers' cut in shelf space for orange juice hurts citrus sales.

Jul. 22--LAKELAND, Fla. -- Loss of supermarket shelf space for orange juice has played a significant role in the three-year decline in sales, a marketing analyst told the Florida Citrus Commission on Wednesday.

Rick Pensa, owner of Insight, Information & Consulting Services of Kennesaw, Ga., estimated the average U.S. supermarket devotes about 5 percent less space for chilled orange juice products on refrigerated shelves, the most competitive section in a grocery store.

That translates to about 37 feet of shelf space, down two feet from a study of orange juice shelf space Pensa did for the Florida Department of Citrus in 2001, he said.
