Sep. 25--Cephalon Inc. will ask a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel today to recommend approval for what doctors are already doing: prescribing the narcolepsy drug Provigil for a broad range of sleep disorders.
The stakes are big for Cephalon. Approval for new uses of Provigil would help the West Chester biopharmaceutical company reach more doctors and expand sales of the drug, which is already its biggest seller. Provigil's revenue rose from $25 million in 1999 to $150 million in 2001, and is expected to be $300 million this year.
