Jul. 23--Verizon Communications Inc., the nation's largest local telephone carrier, began selling Internet-based phone service Thursday as it tries to capture Tampa Bay area customers who get their high-speed Internet over cable.
Verizon's national launch of a telephone service based on Internet technology is considered the largest to date. It was Verizon's second maneuver this week against competitor Bright House Networks, the dominant cable operator in the Bay area.
