Suicide represents the second-leading cause of death among 15- to 24-year-old American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN). Unintentional injuries, especially from motor vehicle crashes, represent the leading cause of death for this population at a rate of 112/100,000. (1) The suicide rate of 34/100,000 for AI/AN youth in this age group is 2.5 times greater than the rate for the entire population of 15- to 24-year-olds in the United States (all races). AI/AN males in this age group are at especially high risk with a suicide rate of 54/100,000, some 2.4 times greater than the rate for US males (all races).
