Article: Texas Sees More Jobs, but Unemployment Rate Holds.

Sep. 19--The state gained 28,500 jobs in August - the largest monthly increase since May 2000, the Texas Workforce Commission said Thursday.

Even so, the state unemployment rate was unchanged from July at 6.6 percent, well above the national rate of 6.1 percent, the commission said.

The biggest job gains came in the education, health care and construction fields.

"Last month, California, a similar-size labor market, lost some 30,000 jobs," said Larry Jones, director of communications for the commission. "New York was similar. So I think it's significant when we continue to add jobs here in Texas."
