THE STANDARD
- The political season kicked off in earnest on Thursday with the beginning of the two-week nomination period for the September 12 Legislative Council elections. A total of 27 candidates rushed to register for the polls which are seen as critical to the future of Hong Kong.
- Former chief secretary Anson Chan has called on the public to accept the reality that direct elections will not be possible in 2007 nor will there be a fully elected legislature in 2008. She also called on political parties to put the people's interests ahead of their own party agendas.
