Aug. 25--Residents of San Martin cherish their open spaces, roadside fruit stands, farm animals and quiet. That's why some want the unincorporated community to become Santa Clara County's 16th city -- to defend its agricultural countryside from encroaching developers.
"We're not looking at forming what a lot of people think of as a city with streetlights, curbs and sidewalks," said Sylvia Hamilton, president of the San Martin Neighborhood Alliance. "We're looking at shaping our own destiny -- keeping it rural."
