Although the PC industry has registered advances in MIPS, screen resolution, digital communication, and disk capacity, computer-processed sound remains a distant frontier.
For years, we associated audio squeaks and shrills as the exclusive domain of games. Computer-related music was considered the province of computer-minted musicians.
But we need to reconsider our prejudices about sound. Computer audio, like color displays, has applications in business, education, and recreation. At the same time, the industry needs to rethink itself because some of its members are displaying a disturbing lack of foresight.
