Oct. 30--Within several weeks, South Dakota's National Guard will find out if it will be called upon to provide more troops to support the U.S. effort in Iraq. According to a recent Army news release, "a very, very detailed" look at units will be done before an undetermined number of them are told to pack their bags for a year-long deployment in Iraq," said Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The South Dakota Guard units in the state are maintaining a high level of readiness, according to the state Guard commander, though it's unlikely they would be deployed to Iraq to replace those state units already there. However, they could be ...
