Oct. 10--Up to 100,000 postmenopausal American women each year could benefit from taking the anti-estrogen drug letrozole after the usual five years on tamoxifen have ended, experts said.
Letrozole, sold as Femara, is already licensed for treating advanced breast cancer, and breast cancer survivors were urged to ask their doctors about starting on it now to prevent recurrence.
"The results of this study unquestionably offer new hope to hundreds of thousands of breast cancer patients and their families," said Paul Goss of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, who led the study.
