In Roman times, Latin inscriptions on stone and writings in ink on papyrus used what is known as "majuscule" lettering. This script was written entirely in capital letters. "Square capital," an early Roman majuscule style, was used mainly for inscriptions on stone.
With the decline of the Roman Empire in the West in the A.D. 400s and the rise of Christianity throughout Europe, literary works were hand-copied by monks in their monasteries. In time, making beautiful manuscripts became an art, and the writing, known as calligraphy, eventually included superb illustration.
