The use of computers in college English classrooms has largely involved teaching writing with word processing programs. Few applications have addressed the other skill that English faculty must teach--how to read and interpret literature. There is some software (mainly for the elementary school level) that teaches students sensitivity to context and tests their comprehension of details, but these are of little help to teachers concerned with imparting the higher cognitive skills of narrative literacy.
