The family of Devaughn Darling, a Florida State football player who died during an offseason workout in 2001 (JET, March 19, 2001), recently resolved a lawsuit with the university after a Tallahassee judge approved a $2 million settlement.

The state will pay the statutory limit of $200,000 to the Darling family, who must petition the Florida Legislature for the remaining $1.8 million. The family must file a claims bill by Aug. 1 to have it considered during the 2005 legislative session.

The claim will be supported by the university under terms of the agreement approved by Circuit Judge L. Ralph Smith. The parties agreed to mediation last November.
