Oct. 18--LAKELAND, Fla.--Polk County's September unemployment rate was worse than last year -- and remained much higher than the national average -- largely because manufacturers kept cutting jobs and tourism-related businesses had yet to accelerate.
Polk County's jobless rate was 7.4 percent, compared with 7.0 percent the same month a year ago, according to the Agency for Workforce Innovation. Statewide, the rate was 5.4 percent, compared with 5.6 percent a year ago.
The nation's unemployment rate was 5.8 percent in September, compared with 5.4 percent the same month a year ago. All figures are not seasonally adjusted.
