Jul. 19--Marshall Field's is gearing up for an extreme makeover that the venerable department store chain hopes will jump-start lagging sales and set it apart from the competition.

The new-look Marshall Field's will add trendy brands, focus on its customers' "lifestyle" needs and jazz up the stores' appearances -- all intended to reinvigorate a struggling retailer in a slumping segment.

"It is incumbent that we re-invent and differentiate ourselves," said Frank Castiglione, a Marshall Field's senior vice president. "We feel we are well positioned to do that."
