Jul. 7--Despite the downturn in both the general economy and the energy industry over the past two years, two of Oklahoma City's largest companies have added hundreds of new jobs, bucking a trend of local jobs moving to Houston.
Devon Energy Corp. has used a series of multibillion dollar mergers and acquisitions to rapidly become the country's largest independent oil and natural gas producer. The company has added about 150 jobs at its Oklahoma City headquarters in the past year and more than 300 since 2001.
Chesapeake Energy Corp. has grown both by buying smaller companies and by acquiring natural gas fields.
