SINCE the fall of the wall in 1989 the city of Berlin has had a slight problem: what to do with its three opera houses? The oldest, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, traces its existence back 200 years to the Court Opera of Frederick the Great. The youngest house, the Deutsche Oper, was founded in 1912; its theater was destroyed in World War II and rebuilt For the residents of West Berlin in 1961. The Komische Oper (Comic Opera), founded in 1947 in East Berlin, provided a more populist repertory and contemporary, ballet programs on its intimate Italian-style raked stage.
