Long a crossroads of history, San Antonio is a blend of deeply rooted traditions and 21st century cosmopolitan flair. The nation's ninth-largest city, San Antonio is a joyful melange of the flavors and sounds of Old Mexico, the Republic of Texas, Germany, the Wild West, and the Deep South.
Native Americans living on the San Antonio River called the area Yanaguana, which means refreshing waters or clear waters. Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon the river in 1691, and because it was the feast day of St. Anthony, they named it San Antonio.
