Jul. 30--Two years ago, Charlie Major, now 58, found himself someplace he hadn't been since he was 12: out of work.
After almost three decades in various high-tech manufacturing gigs, Major was laid off on his birthday in February 2002 from Jennings Technology, where he oversaw the complex assembly process for the company's large capacitors. Major went home to his wife that day and vowed he'd never let someone else be in a position to fire him again.
