RIO DE JANEIRO _ Working-class labor leader-turned-politician Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva swept the polls Sunday in a landslide presidential victory, ushering in a historic shift to the left for Latin America's largest democracy.
Da Silva, the Workers Party candidate and a former metal worker, garnered 61.5 percent of the ballots to government-backed candidate Jose Serra's 38.5 percent, with 97 percent of the official vote tallied.
"Hope won over fear," da Silva said in his victory speech late Sunday after Serra conceded. "Today I can say Brazil voted without fear of being happy."
