DALLAS _ Southwest Airlines Co. flight attendants ratified their new contract Friday in big numbers, with 82 percent approving the four-year deal that their union called "industry-leading."

The vote comes after two years of difficult negotiations between the Dallas-based discounter and the Transport Workers Union Local 556, which ran an aggressive public awareness campaign that airline officials didn't like.

"With this contract, we are better able to do our jobs," Thom McDaniel, president of Local 556 and a key negotiator for the deal, said in a written statement. "And improved wages and benefits will keep us smiling."
