Wisconsin farmers have far more to gain than to lose by giving up their subsidies. That's why Wisconsin should urge U.S. negotiators to lead the World Trade Organization to agreement on guidelines to phase out export subsidies.
As the Wisconsin State Journal reported earlier this week, farmers in Wisconsin and throughout the United States face challenges from producers in Brazil and other developing nations. If U.S. farmers try to remain wedded to subsidies, they will fall behind. Flexibility and the ability to tap into growing foreign markets are the keys to success.
