Jul. 31--IKEA is making a big splash in New Haven this week with a carnival-like grand opening and a big-time marketing push.
Should other furniture stores now be worried about one store?
Maybe not right away. But as more consumers become acquainted with IKEA's low-cost, good-quality brand, they are likely to make the Swedish home furnishings store one of their furniture shopping options.
Experts say that will chip away at competitors, especially those that sell low-end wooden furniture that needs to be put together. Department stores such as Wal-Mart could end up feeling the pressure, they say.
