Porous zinc oxide nanoparticles remove arsenic from water.(Nanotechnology)

Researchers at Oklahoma State University, USA, have used nanoparticles of zinc oxide to remove arsenic from water.

Bulk zinc oxide cannot absorb arsenic, but the researchers overcame this by producing zinc oxide in a porous aggregate form that was suitable for water treatment. The spherical aggregates of nanoparticles have a similar size and shape to the resin beads currently used in water purification systems.

To create the aggregates, the researchers loaded cationic exchange resins with zinc ions. Then they fired them: the result was spherical nanoparticulate zinc oxide spheres.
