PHILADELPHIA _ Five years ago few Americans concerned themselves with stem cells. Now the phrase conjures up hope for debilitating diseases and dreams of big money for biotech companies.

Yet stem cells are still a long way from curing paralysis or Alzheimer's, let alone becoming the promised source of replacement tissue for skin, liver, pancreas, brain, and almost any other part of the human body.

Some scientists worry that the hype is getting too far ahead of the real science, which has become mired in confusion and controversy. Stem cells turn out to be more complicated and less predictable than scientists initially thought. ...
