ANAHEIM, Calif. _ With players from Willie Mays to Willie Mays Aikens, the Giants and Angels have tried for more than four decades to win a World Series.
In 44 previous seasons in San Francisco, the Giants have played in two World Series. They lost the first in 1962 on an ill-directed line drive. They lost in 1989 when they got swept by their neighbors in Oakland.
The Angels never had made the World Series in 41 prior years as a franchise. In 1986, they came within a strike. They didn't return to the playoffs until this year.
