PHILADELPHIA _ After the Michigan game last year, the Penn State football program appeared to be in disarray. The Nittany Lions had lost, 20-0, to the Wolverines at Beaver Stadium, their first home shutout in 216 games or one year before Joe Paterno became head coach.

Penn State was 0-4. Its offense could not score. Its defense was performing a holding action, its finger stuck in a dike with far too many leaks. The Lions had lost 14 of 20 games.

Paterno was still two wins from Bear Bryant's Division I-A record for victories. Some wondered out loud if Penn State was going to win a game all year. Many wondered if it was not ...
