What we have here is anything but a failure to communicate.
For at least six years, some White Earth Ojibwe have been pleading with the University of Minnesota to stop its mapping of the wild rice genome. Never mind what you plan to do, or promise not to do, with your findings, they say; this grain is sacred and, anyway, you can't control what others might do.
That's not a difficult position to understand. Nor is the university's response.
We have no intention of genetically modifying the rice, it says. We just want to understand the wild ...
