Oct. 21--The rising cost of medical malpractice insurance is pressuring maternity units along with doctors, leading two South Florida hospitals to stop delivering babies.
With insurance premiums squeezing profits, Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in Miami-Dade County and Columbia Hospital in West Palm Beach are closing their small obstetrics departments, and other hospitals with maternity care are reassessing whether to stay in the baby business.
"Everybody has thought about it already," said Dr. Richard Greenwald, chief medical officer at Boca Raton Community Hospital.
