Oct. 21--An Assembly Judiciary Committee task force headed by state Rep. Mark Gundrum (R-New Berlin) is developing legislation aimed at making it simpler and less costly for police and prosecutors to catch and charge those involved in identity theft.
In identity theft, a criminal steals a person's Social Security number and other forms of identification and then opens credit card accounts or impersonates the victim in order to spend money and run up debt.
"Our laws just have not kept pace with the criminal element out there," Gundrum said. "The criminal element is becoming much more sophisticated."
