Oct. 9--As the crime of identity theft grows, insurance companies are starting to market coverage that helps victims with the expense and hassle of restoring their good name and credit.
In identity theft, a criminal steals a person's Social Security number and other forms of identification and then opens credit card accounts or impersonates the victim in order to spend money and run up debt.
Although victims generally are not liable for fraudulent transactions, the confusion left behind by the thief can be time-consuming and frustrating to straighten out.
