Oct. 13--The AvaLung -- the brainchild of a Colorado physician that saved the life of a Colorado resident earlier this year -- won't be a blockbuster product for Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., but it may exemplify the company's commitment to innovation.
The device, designed to be worn over a jacket, enables skiers buried in an avalanche to draw air from the snow.
Skiers still need standard rescue gear, such as shovels, probes and beacons. And the AvaLung won't help the one-third of victims who die of injuries. But about half the people buried in avalanches die within 30 minutes from suffocation. The AvaLung can buy them ...
