Longshoremen Strike Begins to Affect Berks County, Pa.

Oct. 5--The costly West Coast longshoremen's strike that began Sunday has begun to affect firms in Berks County.

"Anybody that's importing product will have some exposure," said Wayne A. Krick, director of operations for Yuasa Battery Inc., Bern Township.

"The big problem is for anybody who has vessels coming in to the West Coast that have already been shipped: The product is sitting out there in the ocean," Krick said.

A ripple effect is having an impact on East Coast ports, the Yuasa executive said: As West Coast-bound vessels are diverted to the East Coast through the Panama Canal, Eastern ports get congested, he said.
