Oct. 4--Cahokia Mounds is a hidden tourism treasure, and the state of Illinois plans to change that, state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka said Thursday at the mounds.
"It bothers me that people confuse the mounds with the local landfill," Topinka said, evoking tittering among the small audience at the news conference. "We must not be doing something right here."
The state plans to commission a study of how to promote and preserve the mounds. It will be financed with the help of legislation passed last session.
Under it, the treasurer's office will deposit state funds in commercial banks at less than the prime rate. ...
