Oct. 4--Over the next five years, the number of milk cows in Wisconsin is expected to rise for the first time since 1984, a development that would be a significant boost for the state's endangered dairy industry.
About 10 percent more cows, plus predicted investments in modern milking technology would mean a good-sized increase in milk production and likely investments in cheese plants.
State leaders and those in the dairy industry have feared that drops in milk production over the past 13 years are threatening the cheese industry in Wisconsin.
