Oct. 8--Note to businesses with goods tied up by the West Coast dock dispute: Don't wait for your ship to come in on the East Coast.
"We are trying to get some major cargo rerouted," said Howard Finkel of China Ocean Shipping Co., one of the largest shippers in the world. The problem, he said, is that East Coast ports are not always a viable alternative.
The ports have two things working against them, according to Finkel. One is that East Coast ports can't accommodate some of the large ships that serve the West Coast. Neither can the Panama Canal, through which ships move between the two coasts of the United States.
