During the early 1990s, Greg Geier was trying to make it on his own as a thoroughbred trainer at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.
Although Geier was struggling, veteran conditioner Gene Cilio liked what he saw and asked Geier to be his assistant.
"Gene was after me for a few years," Geier recalled. "The first time I said I wanted to keep going on my own. But by the third time, I said I might as well give it a try.
