Amid the dog days of summer, it's time again to bark up the trivia tree and see what comes down.
Q. On Irvington Drive, between River Road and Northwest Expressway, there are about 90 manhole covers, more than on any street I've seen. What's up?
A. There are 37 city of Eugene wastewater manholes and 24 storm water manholes, indeed a high number, says John Gibson, the city's sub-surface technical supervisor. Among the reasons: The pipes go from 8 inches at River Road to 42 inches at Northwest Expressway, and manhole access points are needed at every transition point.
