Aug. 4--Fulfilling a pledge to spend whatever it takes to win, retail colossus Wal-Mart shelled out a record $1.7 million to overturn a Contra Costa ordinance limiting super-size stores.
The company outspent opponents by more than two to one during its successful campaign to defeat Measure L in March, according to financial disclosure forms filed Tuesday.
Wal-Mart set a Contra Costa mark for the most money ponied up by a single entity for an issue, said Registrar Steve Weir.
