Sep. 25--Community banks, as Goldilocks might say, are not too big. They are not too small. They are just right for a large part of the American economy -- especially small cities and rural areas.
Even in large cities, there is a stratum of consumers and borrowers who also find community banks to their liking.
Community banks, though, are being squeezed. Competition from big banks from above and the growth of credit unions from below are among the reasons.
The largest reason, though, is the cost of regulations. Community banks face the same rules and regulations as the big banks but do not have the same economies of scale to bear the burden.
