HUGE, somewhat ungainly yet oddly dignified, they were among Britain's best-loved creatures, powering over chalky downlands on giant wings.
But affection did not save them from being blasted into extinction by triggerhappy hunters, eager to bag a 'leviathan of the skies' and taste its succulent flesh.
Now, after 172 years, this old friend has returned to these isles, thanks to the tireless efforts of a former policeman as well as the dedication of scientists and conservationists.
