Article: YOU LUCKY BUSTARD! Hunted to extinction in Britain 172 years ago, the world's heaviest flying bird this week came home to roost.

HUGE, somewhat ungainly yet oddly dignified, they were among Britain's best-loved creatures, powering over chalky downlands on giant wings.

But affection did not save them from being blasted into extinction by triggerhappy hunters, eager to bag a 'leviathan of the skies' and taste its succulent flesh.

Now, after 172 years, this old friend has returned to these isles, thanks to the tireless efforts of a former policeman as well as the dedication of scientists and conservationists.
