Sep. 11--SALEM, Ore.--The idea of a temporary income tax increase to help balance the state budget clings to life in the Oregon House.
The House rejected two versions of a $407 million tax increase Tuesday night but sent one back to committee for more work.
The surviving bill would send any tax increase to voters. The one that failed would have adopted the increase outright.
"This isn't the end; this can't be the end," said Rep. Max Williams, R-Tigard. He said a number of Republicans are willing to refer a smaller tax measure to voters.
