Aug. 31--Phillips Petroleum Co. sprang from Oklahoma's oil patch and became an international force in the exploration and production of energy, thanks to the business acumen of its risk-taking founder and a lot of good luck.
Frank Phillips and his brother L.E. -- wildcatters from Iowa -- turned a single producing oil well north of Bartlesville into a successful conglomerate whose brand is recognized worldwide.
