Sep. 6--Communities in the Panhandle and South Plains are vying to cut into the cheese industry as a New Mexico dairy company moves ahead with plans to build a $200 million cheese plant.

Rance Miles, chief executive officer of Select Milk Producers Inc., said his firm has talked to officials in Amarillo, Hereford, Lubbock, Muleshoe, Plainview and Clovis, N.M.

The plant would require six million pounds of milk per day and would require about 100,000 milking cows in the area to support the plant, Miles said. The plant would manufacture Cheddar and mozzarella cheese, he said.
