HOLLYWOOD, Fla. _ A pioneer in organ transplantation suggested on Monday that organ transplant patients may be weaned off anti-rejection drugs starting three months after their transplant by gradually stepping down the drugs over a period of weeks or months.
Dr. Thomas Starzl, professor of surgery at the transplantation institute named for him at the University of Pittsburgh, spoke at the International Congress of the Transplantation Society meeting at the Westin Diplomat. He said almost 300 patients have been weaned from the drugs or had their levels reduced greatly, from taking two or three pills twice-a-day to one pill a week.
