WASHINGTON _ If wind, waves and ocean currents permit, one of the most important relics in U.S. military history will be lifted as early as this weekend from its watery grave off the coast of North Carolina and sent on its way to permanent public display in Virginia.
This gigantic artifact is the turret from the Union warship USS Monitor, a Civil War icon. One of the first two ironclad naval vessels, the Monitor is considered the world's first modern battleship. It also was the first equipped with guns in a revolving turret.
