The 49ers can blame Cade McNown's erratic throws on the shoulder he banged up almost two years ago. The coaches can tell themselves he'll finally find himself in their quarterback-making system. General Manager Terry Donahue can cling to the memory of the redheaded battler he recruited to play at UCLA.
Maybe Donahue will sanction the surgery that McNown says he needs. Maybe it will help. Maybe McNown will be paid $450,000 just to rehabilitate for a year while learning the offense.
