WASHINGTON _ Even as Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. protested his innocence, the House of Representatives voted Wednesday night to expel the Ohio Democrat for violating House ethics rules stemming from his federal conviction on bribery, tax evasion and fraud charges.
The vote was 420-1, making the colorful Traficant just the fifth congressman in the history of the House to be expelled.
Alleging a vast, governmental conspiracy to get rid of him, Traficant told a hushed chamber filled with his colleagues: "I'm prepared to lose everything, I'm prepared to go to jail if you vote to expel me."
